Happy Memorial Day!

We celebrated Memorial Day with a long weekend at Camp Freedom with the Schausts, Farrington-DeLongs, and Colby-Priests.  The weather was, well, varied.  We had cool nights, hot days and strong thunderstorms.  There were canoe trips, fishing, dirt biking, swimming, campfires and Ray still managed to hang tons of paneling!  We finished paneling the main room after renting some scaffolding on Friday night.  The strip of cement board between the two windows will be eventually covered with a stone veneer to protect the wall from the wood stove we are going to install.  That room just needs some window and door trim and some flooring and it will be done!

Ray and I are still debating what to do about the light fixture in the middle of the large room.  We thought we had settled on an antler chandelier, but after the heat this weekend, we have been re-visiting this decision.  Both Ray's dad and the fireplace installer told us with this kind of ceiling height, a fan would be really helpful with both heating and cooling.  I really like this one.

It is designed to move air in large spaces and it almost 4 feet across.  It is a totally different look than a chandelier, but may make the interior much more comfortable.  We are also to the point where we need to choose the siding for the exterior of the cabin.  I think we have narrowed it down to two choices.  We are looking at fiber cement panels that look like board and batten, or we may go with steel lap siding.  Both of these are very low maintenance.  We are hoping to hire the same guy that hung the trusses for us last summer and his labor quotes will help us decide which product to use.  We are thinking about a barn red color for the outside.  I originally wanted to go with dark brown with white trim, but after using the dark wood paneling on the inside, we thought that would be too much brown.  Our building permit expires in September, so one way or another, all these decisions have to be made before then!
